The PGI - Protected Geographical Indication

When was it created

The overseeing Consortium originated in 1994, in the form of an association of producers of the blood orange,( which was subject to recognition by the European Union) then as the PGI when it reached the expectations of the Reg. CEE2081/92.In 1996 it obtained the recognition of the European Union as PGI (Reg. 1107-June12,1996). The blood oranges then became one of the first typical produce to be protected on a national level, thus leading the way for the constitutional procedure for the Guardianship Consortium ( as it exists today), with the involvement of all the facets that make it up (production and conditioning). For an adjustment to the status ( as required but the norms set out in L.590/99) it was officially granted status in 2002.

What is it?

The PGI (Protected Geographical Indication) is a trademark which is attributed to a product which originates in a determined geographic area. Whomever produces according to the PGI is expected to follow strict rules and regulations (download rules and regolations) for the produce and is subject to control by the organization.

To be able to retain this trademark a product must have the following characteristics:

1. originate in the region or area indicated.

2. possess a determined quality, reputation or other character that can be attributed to the geographical area.

3. at least one faze of the production process or transformation must come from the determined geographical area.

Why is it important:

It has been noted that the Italian consumer perceives the national products with it’s guarantee to be good and tasty. Such a guarantee is recognized in particular with the blood oranges produced in Sicily. The guarantee of quality, origin and traceability is offered to the consumer by “Arancia Rossa di Sicilia” thanks to the PGI (Protected Geographical Indication) trademark; representing therefore the important element of visibility, transparency and obtaining consumer trust.
