It is believed that this type comes from a bud mutation of a Sanguinello orange discovered in a citrus grove in Francofonte between the 8th and 9th century . The ripening process on the hills of these lands starts in mid- December (because these areas are better exposed to the sun) and ends in mid- May (for those less exposed). The fruits are of a big caliber and spherical form tending to be on the oval side. This variety is distinguished by it’s collar or “nose”, which is more or less prominent. The color of the peel is yellowish orange and reddish on half of the surface. The seedless pulp is yellowish orange with reddish pigmentations more or less intense depending on when it is harvested, averagely juicy and has excellent flavor. The following clones are also admitted in the cultivation: Tarocco cumone, Tarocco Galice, Tarocco gallo, Tarocco del muso, Tarocco nucellare 57-1E-1 e 61-1E-4, Tarocco Catania e Tarocco Scirč.
